CartWatch Constant Contact Integration

Automatically unsubscribe flagged bot contacts in Constant Contact, so fake checkouts stop polluting your campaigns and stop counting toward your Constant Contact bill.

What the integration does

CartWatch scores every Shopify checkout for bot behavior. With Constant Contact connected and auto-suppression enabled, each flagged email address that exists in your Constant Contact account is:

  • Unsubscribed — the contact stops receiving your campaigns and automations. Constant Contact doesn't bill for unsubscribed contacts, so bots also come off your active contact count.
  • Tagged CartWatch: bot — so you can always see which unsubscribes CartWatch performed, and segment them in Constant Contact.

Everything else on the contact — name, lists, custom fields, notes — is left as it was.

Unsubscribes can't be undone by an app

Constant Contact does not let any app re-subscribe a contact once it has been unsubscribed — only the person can, by signing up again through one of your sign-up forms. That rule exists to protect people from being re-added to lists without their consent.

For that reason CartWatch waits a little before it unsubscribes anyone, and checks again right before it does: if a late order or a fresher checkout update shows the shopper is real, nothing is changed in Constant Contact. If CartWatch clears a shopper after the unsubscribe has already happened, the contact stays unsubscribed and the shopper needs to sign up again through your form.

Connecting

  1. Install CartWatch from the Shopify App Store if you haven't already.
  2. Open Settings in CartWatch.
  3. In the Constant Contact Integration card, click Connect Constant Contact.
  4. You'll be taken to Constant Contact to sign in and approve access. CartWatch then connects to your account automatically.

Managing the integration

All Constant Contact settings live in the Constant Contact Integration card in CartWatch Settings:

  • Auto-suppress bots in Constant Contact — toggle whether flagged checkouts are unsubscribed automatically.
  • Disconnect Constant Contact — revokes CartWatch's access and deletes the stored credentials. You can reconnect at any time.

Troubleshooting

  • “Constant Contact permissions were declined” — the authorization was cancelled before approval. Click Try connecting again in Settings and approve access.
  • A bot wasn't unsubscribed yet — Constant Contact adds Shopify customers once a day, so it can take up to a day after the checkout. CartWatch keeps checking for three days. Bots that never reach your Constant Contact account (for example, if your Shopify sync only imports customers who opted in) never need unsubscribing.
  • A real customer was unsubscribed — ask them to sign up again through one of your Constant Contact sign-up forms, and let us know so we can look at why they were flagged.
  • Your contact count didn't drop — Constant Contact prices on your highest active contact count, so a bot that was already counted may not lower the current bill. Unsubscribing is what stops bots accumulating from here on.
