If your Shopify admin is still full of fake abandoned checkouts, abandoned checkout spam, or abandoned cart bots, you are not alone — and Shopify’s June 2026 update did not make that problem go away for most stores.
On June 16, 2026, Shopify announced “Reduced bot noise in abandoned checkouts”: when bots test stolen card numbers and never complete payment, Shopify no longer creates an abandoned checkout for that session. It’s a real improvement. Merchants who were drowning in card-testing junk may have noticed a cleaner recovery list.
But “bot noise” is Shopify’s phrase. Merchants searching the Community and Google still ask about fake abandoned checkouts, Shopify abandoned checkout bots, and card testing flooding abandoned checkouts. Here’s what the update actually fixed — and why spam checkouts keep showing up.
What Shopify’s abandoned checkout bot update actually does
The change is narrower than the headline. Two things define its scope:
- It only targets card-testing bots. These are scripts that run stolen card numbers through your checkout to see which ones are still valid, without ever completing an order. When Shopify recognizes that pattern, it no longer creates an abandoned checkout for the session.
- It only covers that card-testing pattern. Shopify classified it as an “Improvement.” It does not score every suspicious checkout, delete old fake abandoned checkouts, or stop bots that never attempt a payment.
In practice, many bots never look like multi-card testing in one session. They fabricate a name and email, hit checkout, and leave — no payment probe, nothing for this filter to catch. Those still become abandoned checkouts.
Why merchants still see fake abandoned checkouts
Merchants are still reporting fake abandoned checkouts and abandoned cart bots weeks after the update, because most of what they’re seeing is not the card-testing pattern Shopify now suppresses. A few patterns show up constantly:
- Fabricated everything. Made-up names, throwaway emails, and placeholder addresses (
123 Main St,New York, NY 10001shows up constantly) — enough to generate a checkout event, nothing more. - Direct API / cart hits. Bots that POST straight to endpoints like
/cart/add.jsor jump a cart URL into checkout, skipping the browser storefront. Little or no session context a real shopper leaves behind. - Patterned or disposable emails. Sequential addresses, obviously generated strings, or free-mail domains associated with abuse.
- Marketing list poisoning. Bots that check the marketing opt-in box specifically to get fake addresses into your Klaviyo or Omnisend flows.
None of that needs a payment attempt, so Shopify’s card-testing filter has nothing to catch. The checkout still gets created, still lands in Abandoned checkouts, and can still trigger recovery email — sent to an address that was never a real person. That is also why fake abandoned checkouts keep wrecking your real abandonment rate even when the admin list looks a little cleaner.
What this means for your store
If you rely on Shopify’s abandoned checkout list as your only bot signal, you’re seeing a smaller but still incomplete picture. The update does not score checkouts for bot likelihood, does not tag suspicious customers, and does not stop junk emails from reaching your marketing platform. It hides one narrow card-testing category from becoming abandoned checkouts.
Catching the rest requires scoring checkouts on the signals bots actually leave behind — email format, address patterns, missing visitor context, request velocity — and acting on that score automatically when the checkout happens.
That’s the gap CartWatch fills. It listens to checkout webhooks for the fake abandoned checkouts and abandoned cart bots Shopify’s filter doesn’t cover, scores each checkout in real time, auto-tags likely bots on the customer record, and suppresses them from Klaviyo and Omnisend before they reach a send.
Shopify’s update is a good sign that abandoned checkout bot noise is being taken seriously platform-wide — but it’s a starting point, not a full fix for fake abandoned checkouts. If your store is still fielding abandoned checkout spam, install CartWatch from the Shopify App Store and see what’s still slipping through.
